The Language Acquisition Theory

One of the most influential figures of this theory is Noam Chomsky who believe humans have an innate ability to learn languages. Another one is Stephen Krashen who developed the Input Hypothesis which centers on the idea that language acquisition occurs when learners are exposed to language input that is slightly beyond their current level of competence or comprehensible inputs.

Both believe in acquiring languages naturally and intuitively akin to the way a child learns their native language, as opposed to conscious learning through formal instruction. Acquisition is seen as a more organic and effective way to develop true language proficiency.

Comprehensible Input

Comprehensible input is language that is slightly above the learner's current level of proficiency, but still understandable. It is the key to language acquisition, according to Stephen Krashen's Input Hypothesis.

When learners are exposed to comprehensible input, they are able to understand the meaning of the language without having to translate it word-by-word. This allows them to focus on acquiring the language naturally, rather than on learning individual words and grammar rules.

This approach posits that learners acquire language best when they receive input that is slightly above their current level of proficiency, but still understandable.

We distinguish between acquiring versus learning a language. We believe that practicing language acquisition in context can significantly accelerate language fluency.
